Learning Chinese
The Chinese language is one of the most difficult languages for westerner to master. The most challenging aspect is the written language, composed of thousands of thousands of unique characters. A serious student must dedicate many hours to learning and retaining characters. While it is certainly an admirable pursuit, one that would definitely prove useful and rewarding in the long run, many foreign professionals simply lack the time that learning to read and write would require. Many expatriates eschew the written language in favor of the far more accessible spoken language.
